The art of increasing little trees that resemble full-sized mature ones is known as bonsai. Its purpose is simply for the pleasure of increasing them and to become able to take pleasure in their beauty. Following the second world war, there was a wonderful deal of info on the market relating to this art form within the West and to this day exhibitions continue to become held. Also, literature about bonsai timber that was once not attainable was translated to English and became a lot more obtainable.

The bonsai is often directly linked in history to Chinese penjing which translates as tray scenery. The Japanese refer to bonsai as penzai derived from penjing. There are actually three separate categories of penjing which consist of water and land, bushes and landscape.

Tropical and subtropical kinds are sometimes grown inside; even so they’re normally grown outdoors. It is not the same as a general plant around the home and will require far more care and watering. It will have benefits as compared towards the outdoors bonsai mainly because it might probably maintain leaves year round. It may well never have the moss covering that an outdoor bonsai grower extremely seeks.

Partially grown specimens are typically the most effective way to begin and seeds are rarely ever applied to start a tree. Mature stock; or a partially grown plant permits for an older appearance and this is what is desired. When choosing a individual specimen it is actually crucial to select a single which will develop well within the specific area that it is going to be placed in.

Mature stock is collected in a couple of various techniques. Cuttings are one way; they’re placed inside a medium for rising until roots develop. An additional technique normally utilised is layering which will allow the roots to grow next towards the live branch prior to it is actually removed.

An additional offered option is to purchase nursery stock which will permit the tree a few great seasons of starting time. There can be benefits and disadvantages to going this path. The shape may possibly already be developed and altering it may be hard, which will limit the path in which the trunk has the capability to develop. It might probably even so; be developed immediately.

Unique tools are of wonderful use with tending to the tree. Watering will a large part of the rising process as it needs to become moist most from the time. Don’t over water though or root rot is really a really real possibility. Repotting are going to be required several times to prevent the tree from becoming bound to one particular pot and to encourage root growth.

Numerous several methods are utilised when creating a bonsai which incorporate pruning, trimming, clamping, wiring, defoliation, deadwood and grafting. Any of these techniques is acceptable, but certain aesthetic characteristics need to be considered to comply with tradition. You will find some principles which are key including miniaturization, asymmetry, proportion among elements, expression of wabi or sabi and no trace of artist. With building technique and patience it can be possible for anyone to experience the tranquility of caring for bonsai bushes at residence.

The Japanese black pine bonsai is one of the most desired species of Bonsai. It has a very specific growing pattern which makes it unique among Bonsai trees and it is not a tree that the beginner should attempt to cultivate due to the time and care involved in upkeeping.

If you are an experienced Bonsai grower then this is the tree for you.

One of the great features of this species is that it is extremely adaptable to virtially any climate; hot or cold. This makes it a good choice for Bonsai enthusiasts who live in northern portions of the world.

So, what is the right way to trim a Japanese black pine bonsai?

Due to the thick needle growth patterns, you need to make sure you remove at least 50 percent of the needles, especially from the top section of the tree during the pruning process. Should you need to cut off a branch or cut into the trunk you MUST do this during the autumn season. This is because this is the time of year when the tree sap is at it’s lowest levels. Cover the cut with petroleum jelly to protect it against disease.

Repotting can only be done once the tree is between two and five years of age and only in the spring season. This is because spring is the season where your pine will gain the most growth and it will be much easier for the roots to take hold in new soil.

Do not wash the roots of the Japanese pine bonsai before you move it to it’s new home.

Your tree desires soil with an average moisture retention. If you really want to enhance the conditions in which your tree is growing you can add a nitrogen fertilizer late in the spring just as the new needles on the tree begin to grow hard. Besides this fertilizing, you should apply a high nitrogen fertilizer approximately two to three weeks prior to the onset of the autumn season.

So you like bonsai trees but you have a brown thumb…what do you do now? Good news for you is that you can still enjoy the look of bonsai with artificial bonsai plants. Typically these are pretty reasonably priced and in many cases look just like the real thing (that is unless you get up close and really look and feel the plant).

Hold on Sensei…did you actually suggest that having an artificial bonsai is okay?

Yes…

Although, an artificial bonsai plant isn’t as good as the real thing, artificial plants don’t need the constant care and attention in the same way as real bonsai trees, and so you can just leave it inside your home and never worry about too much water or light. Besides, what good will real bonsai plants do to your home if you cannot keep it alive and looking well? Dead and limp plants are not a good feature of your living room.

Making The Right Choice of Artificial Bonsai Plants For Your Home

When you go to buy an artificial bonsai plant , you need to take a careful note of the present decorations that exist in your home. It’s important that the artificial bonsai you choose will compliment your current home decor, and should match or contrast in some way to add to the atmosphere of your room. Do not just be content to buy any kind of artificial bonsai plants that are on sale if you do not want to end up with mismatched decorations.

Obviously if you are limited for space in your home, don’t buy those large artificial bonsai plants. A dainty artificial bonsai plant that you can put on top of the table to make a focal point will add to the ambiance of your room.

If you can when it comes to the materials your artificial bonsai plant is made from, it would be best to buy those that are made up of biodegradable products if possible. Forget about those plastic things as they look artificial. At some time in the future when you want to dispose of your artificial bonsai plants you will not be contributing to landfill sites, so choose biodegradable products.

Where To Buy Artificial Bonsai Plants

Lots of shops, department stores and garden centers sell good quality artificial bonsai plants. Check out some of the stores and shops in your locality to find something that will suit your needs. You can save yourself time by shopping in online stores which also sell artificial bonsai plants. Ring around and find the best option for you, get an idea of prices and make your choice.

One great source for authentic looking artificial bonsai is through Bonsai Boy of NY. They carry a wide selection of artificial bonsai which I’m sure you will be amazed at – they look so real! You can see what they have to offer by clicking here: Artificial Bonsai Trees

Too many times those new to the art of Bonsai will make the mistake of using commercial potting soil to plant their trees. Unlike a common houseplant, Bonsai trees require a free-draining type of soil as their roots will not tolerate having “wet feet”. Potting and top soils can remain wet for many weeks and, over time, compacts down cutting off the air, water and nutrient supply to the root system and ultimately killing your Bonsai.

Special Bonsai Tree soil is comprised of a mixture of ingredients which allows water to freely drain while at the same time retains moisture. Additionally, the soil allows the roots to breathe air and prevents soil compaction. Essentially, it is like a time release capsule releasing water, nutrients and air over a period of time to your Bonsai. A good Bonsai soil profile consists of approximately 25% water, 25% air and 50% solid particulate matter.

There are two basic types of Bonsai tree soil: a Conifer Bonsai Soil mix and a Tropical/Sub-Tropical Bonsai Soil mix. Make sure that before you add any soil to your pot that you cover the drainage holes at the bottom with screening to prevent any of the soil from washing out of the pot. When repotting your Bonsai it is best to use the soil mixture in its dry state.

For your convenience I have listed below some essential Bonsai tree soils and screens to help you choose the correct one for your particular tree.

Professional Bonsai Soil – 2 lbs. Those who practice the fine art of bonsai have known for years the very special qualities that professional bonsai soil imparts to soil mixes. Its unique properties help provide free passage of air and water to root systems while significantly reducing soil compaction. This unique bonsai soil is produced by expanding and vitrifying selected shale in a rotary kiln at temperatures in excess of 2000 degrees F. This process makes the soil sterile and environmentally inert. It is a natural non-toxic, highly absorbtive ceramic granule with a generally neutral PH. It is dimensionally stable and will not degrade like other amending products. There is no need for it to be re-applied year after year. A good bonsai soil profile is approximately 25% water, 25% air and 50% solid particulate matter. However, when soils are compacted, an imbalance occurs. Solid particles are pressed together, and water and air are squeezed out. With less pore space, soils become too dense for the movement of air, water and nutrients, and the favorable environment for the beneficial microbial activity necessary in a healthy growing medium, is lost. Our professional bonsai soil absorbs excess water during rain or watering, then slowly releases this excess water as the soil dries acting in effect like a time release capsule. Use as a blend with your soil mix or by itself.

Question: Is caring for a Bonsai tree while I’m on vacation difficult? Do I need to hire someone to take care of my plant while I’m gone?

~Louise in Tulsa, OK

Hi Louise and thank you for your question! The answer to your question really depends upon how long you intend to be gone. If your trip is short (3-4 days), you can get away without a Bonsai-sitter. You can follow this simple method:

1. Fill your bathtub or sink with 1-2″ of water. Place your Bonsai tree in the water and let it soak up the water through the bottom of the pot for 15-20 minutes.
2. Remove your bonsai pot from the water and allow it to drain for 5 minutes.
2. Wrap your pot with plastic wrap to hold in the moisture.

For slightly longer periods (5-6 days) you can put your pot in a tray of water which is approximately 1/4″ from the top edge of your Bonsai pot.

The Bonsai should then be placed in a spot which receives only a few hours of filtered morning sunlight. Also – keep your Bonsai away from air vents. The best spot is one where the temperature and humidity will be consistent day or night.

Any longer than 6 days and you should get a Bonsai-sitter. In order to help your Bonsai-care taker determine when your Bonsai need watering, I would suggest you pick up a moisture meter which will show exactly how moist or dry the Bonsai is and exactly when it needs watering. Here is the one that we use on our Bonsai:

Moisture MeterIn caring for your Bonsai, knowing when to water is essential to the successful maintenance of the tree. Whether you are a beginner or expert, a moisture meter is a vital tool and should be used to take the guess-work out of watering. We use them every day. Great for bedding plants as well as all houseplants.

The most important thing you need to remember is that your Bonsai craves consistencency. The less you change the routine, the better your Bonsai will grow.

Have fun on your trip!

Bonsai trimming is an important factor in keeping your indoor bonsai alive and happy. Many people make crucial errors when trimming their bonsai which cause their trees to be vulnerable to disease and ultimately die. In an effort to help you here are some things you always need to remember when trimming your bonsai:

Whenever you think about bonsai gardenia might not be quite so recognized in this country, however the gardenia is among the most popular varieties in Japan for bonsai, a few others being pine, azalea, maple, and plum. Bonsai is a unique art form with regards to raising shrubs or trees. A mix of proficient trimming and limiting the plant to a compact tray or container keeps it little. A relatively new tree may be trained to look like a tree that has been growing for hundreds of years.

A bonsai gardenia, require very particular care, just like many other varieties of bonsai trees. If you give the proper care this will result in a bonsai tree that can survive for many, many years. In fact, a well maintained bonsai tree could outlive even YOU! The goal is to keep the tree as natural looking as possible only in a miniature form. Many bonsai enthusiasts believe that a bonsai should look as if it had been plucked straight from nature – never being touched by a human hand. While this is the opinion of some – you still can shape your bonsai however you wish.

PREFERRED VARIETY

One of the unique features of the bonsai gardenia is that it will grow beautiful and fragrant flowers just like a normal sized gardenia. You will not see flowers on other bonsai such as pine or ficus. Although the blooms seem, at first look, to be much larger than they should be – in the end it all appears very natural. Gardenia jasminoides and Gardenia thunbergia are two of the most desired species as they are dwarf varieties of gardenia and produce the most successful bonsai specimens.

WATER AND CARE

Bonsai trees, in general, require more attention than your standard every day house plant. The soil needs to be kept moist (but not wet) at all times. Bonsai can very easily die due to over watering. On the other hand, bonsai root systems are much smaller and can easily dry out if not kept moist. So you can see it is a delicate balance that you need to juggle. The gardenia is hardy in zones 7-9 so your bonsai can be grown outdoors in some places around the country. Remember, you bonsai will still need a good deal of attention even though it is growing outside.

BONSAI GARDENIA SHAPE

There is no particular shape that you need to make your bonsai. Bonsai trees are a reflection of you and the style of bonsai you choose to shape your tree with reflects your own unique personality. Pruning and wiring a bonsai is a labor of love. While you are creating something that is uniquely your own it is important to remember that these trees are delicate and care must be taken in order not to damage a branch or trunk. Once wiring is done – you leave the wire in place for as many as six months to allow the tree to be trained into the shape you desire.

A special note about gardenia bonsai. You should only prune and wire a bonsai gardenia when it is not actively blooming or budding. In fact pruning should only take place immediately after a blooming session as finished. To keep you bonsai small make sure that you not only prune, but that you pinch off new buds.

The Zelkova bonsai is a well-known variety of bonsai which is particularly well-liked because of its resistant to bug infestations as well as disease complications. This particular aspect helps it be a fairly easy tree to cultivate. However it is primarily the resistance that additionally causes it to be one of the most costly bonsai trees. Probably the most popular shape that you will come across in a Zelkova bonsai may be the broom or Hokidachi style which it is referred to as in Japanese.

The two most in-demand types of the Zelkova bonsai include the Japanese Grey Bark elm and the Chinese Zelkova. The first kind features a vigorous rate of growth. The Chinese Zelkova is a scaled-down variant of the Japanese Zelkova and features a bark which is a brownish or greyish shade.

Raising from Seeds

It is possible to grow this kind of tree from seeds or from a sapling. Because it can be expensive, growing Zelkova bonsai from seeds has become a popular option. You must find a reputable bonsai seed distributor for the best quality. One that I can recommend is Bonsai Boy of NY.

Click here to learn more about Indoor Bonsai Seeds

Watering and Lighting Requirements

The Zelkova bonsai, just like every other bonsai needs sufficient watering. Because it is potted within a compact area, it’s going to need watering frequently. Even so, you should not water it too much. The Zelkova would not want wet roots, particularly for the duration of wintertime. Ultimately, it is best to water the bonsai only in the morning hours and then leave it on its own for the remainder of the day.

In the time of summer, you should mist the bonsai with water several times throughout the day.

The Zelkova needs natural light and thus, it should be placed in a spot where it can receive partial or full natural light. Throughout the summer season you need to store it in partial shade to prevent the leaves from getting dried out.

Feeding and Fertilizer

A well-balanced feeding is essential towards the proper development of your bonsai. One half dose fertilizing should be done each 7 days, or a full dose every alternating week. You can use an organic eco-friendly fertilizer on your tree from early spring to fall with no worry.

Bug Infestation and Diseases

A normal functioning Zelkova bonsai is certainly able to fight off a variety of diseases and unwanted pests. Therefore make certain that you don’t weaken the tree with frequent wounds and cuts. Prune your bonsai only as needed to avoid any complications.

Potting your Bonsai

Besides each one of these, keep in mind that the Zelkova bonsai needs repotting early on in the spring which really should be performed each year. Having said that, when the tree grows older, you should only repot every few years. The Zelkova has to have deep pots with fertile and well-drained dirt.

Additional Considerations

It is easy to train a Zelkova bonsai to mirror the natural growth of a full sized Zelkova tree. You should employ the use of bonsai wires, strings and sticks to attain this appearance. Small curves may also be formed in the tree by affixing little bamboo terraces to the limbs.

Even so, when using the wires on the Zelkova bonsai, be cautious, since the limbs of this tree tend to be small and delicate.
